Researchers in earth sciences and information technology at UC San Diego are organizing a three-day Grand Challenges workshop May 31 to June 2 in La Jolla, Calif., on the topic of “Big Data and the Earth Sciences.”

A paradigm-changing study in the journal Nature by cancer researchers and computer scientists at UC San Diego and other institutions found that short fragments of circular DNA that encode cancer genes are far more common in cancer cells than previously believed.

Arthur C. Clarke Center for Human Imagination showcases new video installation for an exhibition in Germany that opened on Feb. 11. Sci-fi author Bruce Sterling, who is affiliated with the Clarke Center, gave the opening talk at the “Hello, Robot” exhibition, and Clarke Center director Sheldon Brown led the team (including Sterling) that created the video installation “My Elegant Robot Freedom” on display in the new exhibition.

The Center for Cyber-Archaeology and Sustainability (CCAS) and the Qualcomm Institute played host to nearly 200 freshmen and older students taking computer science, robotics or AP world history at La Jolla Country Day School. The students converged on UC San Diego to learn more about how technology can safeguard the future of the ancient past.

UC San Diego distinguished professor of engineering Mohan Trivedi in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department has accepted the distinguished alumnus award from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, in the Indian state of Rajasthan. Trivedi returned to the campus for the first time in nearly 43 years to accept the honor.

The International Society of Computational Biology (ISCB) has announced the winners of its top four awards for 2017, and leading the list is UC San Diego computer-science professor Pavel Pevzner. The Accomplishments by a Senior Scientist Award honors Pevzner's almost 30 years in the field of bioinformatics, and in particular his significant contributions to research and education.

On Wednesday, March 1, UC San Diego will hand out its 2016 Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Diversity Awards at a ceremony in the Price Center West Ballroom. Of the 10 Microsoft Ph.D. Fellowships announced today by Microsoft Research, two of the awards went to graduate students in UC San Diego’s Jacobs School of Engineering: Computer Science and Engineering Ph.D. student Mengting Wan, and Electrical and Computer Engineering Ph.D. student Bita Darvish Rouhani. No other university received more than one of this year’s fellowships.

Computer Science and Engineering Ph.D. student C. Ailie Fraser has been awarded one of ten Adobe Research Fellowships in 2017 to pursue her work in human-computer interaction and human-centered design as a researcher in the Design Lab at UC San Diego.

UC San Diego alumnus Ross Tate (Ph.D. ’12), now a computer-science professor at Cornell, will receive the Dahl-Nygaard Prize in 2017 for “fundamental contributions to type systems with applications to object-oriented languages.”
